Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
