Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
