Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
