Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
