Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
