Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
