Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
