Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
