Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
