Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
