Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
