Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
