Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
