Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
