Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
