Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
