Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
