Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
