Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
