Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
