Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
