Be smart, play cunning, and pickup craps the ideal way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
