Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
