Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
