Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
