Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
