Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
