Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
