Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
