Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
