Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
