Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
