Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
