Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
