Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
