Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
