Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
