Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
