Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
