Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
