Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
