Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
