Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
