Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
