Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French relocated south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
